About Us

Justin Harris is a photographer, content creator, and documentary filmmaker living deep in the mountains of West Virginia with his wife Marcie, son Miles, and their 40 year old pet corn snake, Don Konky.  Justin is an avid whitewater kayaker and skier and began his career in action sports photography.  His exploration into film began as the media director of a small West Virginia ski resort during the winter, and a whitewater photoboater on the Upper Yough during the summer.  Over the last four years Justin has carved a niche in the mid Atlantic whitewater scene through a river report series documenting the elusive Class IV-V steep creeks of his home state.  His first short film, The Red Creek Sessions, showcased a glimpse into one of the most dangerous and logistically challenging steep creeks in West Virginia, as well as highlighting the beauty and unique aspects of the Cheat River Watershed while exploring geology through the eyes of whitewater kayakers.  The Red Creek Sessions toured the globe in 2023, including stops in Kiev, Ukraine, Valparaiso, Chile, T’iblisi, Georgia, The Maine Outdoor Film Festival in Portland, the Eugene Environmental Film Festival in Oregon, and the RAW Science Film Festival in Los Angeles.  The Red Creek Sessions has received over 30 film awards including The Viewer’s Choice Award at the National Paddling Film Festival, and the Best River Kayaking Film at the prestigious Waterwalker Film Festival in Canada. Mountain River Media’s newest film, ‘Freeland ~ A White Grass Story’ explores the unique magic of White Grass XC Ski Area, a one of a kind nordic ski community in Canaan Valley, West Virginia, and the relationship it has with the Blackwater River kayaking community.  Be sure to check out our ‘films page’ (Link) for the story of Freeland’s grassroots origins.
