Freeland ~ A White Grass Story
The latest documentary by Mountain River Media focuses on West Virginia nordic skiing at the iconic White Grass Ski Area, and the mountain’s relationship to the Blackwater River kayaking community. The Blackwater is the artery linking the two communities together, and its water is the lifeblood of both cultures. Through the words of Chip Chase, Sue Haywood, Jesse Shimrock, and Stephen Strothers, learn about the history, grassroots growth, and overall friendly vibe of this unique place and the community that developed around it. Tied into the Blackwater kayaking community, this documentary explores the ephemeral nature of the sports of nordic skiing and whitewater creek boating in West Virginia. Enjoy the ride!
The Red Creek Sessions
Red Creek is the elusive Class V+ whitewater gem flowing from the Dolly Sods Wilderness in the West Virginia Highlands. Join Dr. Philip Prince, an expert in Appalachian geology, as he takes an in depth look at the rock structures of this region through a rare descent of Red Creek by a group of local whitewater kayakers on Cheatfest weekend of 2022. The film then explores the entire Cheat River watershed as we highlight all the runs of this world famous drainage created by the unique geology of the region. The Red Creek Sessions is the winner of the Viewer’s Choice Award and Accomplished Film Award at the 2023 National Paddling Film Festival, a featured program on West Virginia PBS, and the winner of countless film awards throughout the world.
The Ida Sessions
The Ida Sessions are what started it all for Mountain River Media and film. This Youtube edit was filmed over the course of 3 days following Hurricane Ida in early September of 2021. During those three days, the Mountain River Media team ran 10 laps on 6 different creeks and rivers throughout the region, some of which had never been properly documented through video. These runs included Hemlock Run, Upper Muddy Creek, Fikes Run, Teeter and Laural Creeks of the Arden Section of the Tygart, and the Top Yough. The success and joy that came from creating The Ida Sessions is the foundation of what led to The Red Creek Sessions and Freeland. Enjoy this look back on the early days of Mountain River Media.
